Celebrate St David’s Day at home
St David’s Day, Dydd Gŵyl Dewi, falls on 1st March and celebrates the patron saint of Wales. Across Wales, children dress up in traditional costume, schools hold concerts and people wear daffodils or leeks. Whether you have Welsh roots or simply love a reason to celebrate, a themed family movie night is an easy way to join in from anywhere.
At Barnett Confectioners we’ve been making sweets in Nottingham since 1896, and a British national day feels like the perfect excuse for a bowl of something special.
Step 1: Set the scene
Wales has a ready-made colour scheme: the red dragon on a green and white flag, plus yellow daffodils. Some easy decoration ideas:
- Paper daffodils on the table or windowsill.
- A red dragon drawn by the kids and stuck on the door.
- A “Noson Ffilm Cymru” (Welsh movie night) sign.
- Welsh cakes or bara brith alongside the sweets.
Step 2: Choose your film
- A family-friendly film made or set in Wales.
- A documentary about the Welsh coast, mountains or castles.
- A dragon adventure film, the obvious choice for younger viewers.
Step 3: Sweets in Welsh colours
Match your sweet bowl to the flag and the national flower:
- Red for the dragon: Cherry Mega Sours, with a rich, old-fashioned cherry flavour.
- Green for the flag: Apple Mega Sours, sharp, green and tangy.
- Yellow for the daffodil: Lemon Mega Sours, a classic citrus punch.
A variety pack is the easiest way to get several colours in one order.
Step 4: Make it interactive
The Dragon Fire challenge
Every Mega Sour has an extremely sour coating that lasts around 20 seconds. Everyone (aged 5 and over) takes one at the same time, and whoever keeps a straight face longest is crowned the Red Dragon. For older teens and adults who like heat, Zombie Bombz Hot Chilli adds a chilli kick after the sour, a fitting “dragon fire” finale.
Welsh trivia between scenes
Pause the film and ask a few questions. Some to get you started:
- What are the two national symbols worn on St David’s Day? (The daffodil and the leek.)
- What is the Welsh for “Happy St David’s Day”? (Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus.)
- What creature is on the Welsh flag? (A red dragon.)
- St David is remembered for the saying “Gwnewch y pethau bychain”. What does it mean? (Do the little things.)
Rate the flavours
Give everyone a scorecard and rate each flavour out of 10. It’s a great way to find the family favourite before your next order.
